C is for Clowns

What is it about clowns? I don't have a fear of clowns, I just find them creepy sometimes (hey, there has to be something wrong if you can fit that many people inside a small car). But, clowns are actually one of the things people fear the most, and that's probably why so many great horrors have come out of clowns and circuses.

I think it also has something to do with what clowns are meant to represent. When young, didn't most of us have dreams of running away to join the circus? I can admit that I did (for a short time... I even practised some acrobatics with my cousin). That sense of freedom and happiness is the exact opposite of what clowns represent in horror stories.

Like I said, I don't have a fear of clowns. Actually, I don't have a fear of much (mainly because I had really traumatising cousins who took me to the carnival and left me standing at the opening of a haunted house... which was just a pitch black room with people waiting to scare you, when I was six... that's just one of the things that desensitised me to horror and other fears). Even though I'm not scared of clowns, doesn't mean I actually like them... I still find them creepy.

Give me spiders. Give me snakes. Give me anything except for clowns (and maybe cockroaches... I just can't stand them).

So, how do you feel about clowns? Anything that you're really scared of that you don't mind admitting to?

I'm afraid of sharks. Seriously, I can freak myself out in a swimming pool.

I grew up watching Bozo on WGN every day at lunch. No fear of clowns here! :-)

I have to laugh at M.P.'s comment. I grew up on Bozo on WGN, too! I'm not afraid of clowns, but I agree that they're creepy and some more than others. Although Bozo might have been okay, the clown in Poltergeist terrorized me! But I'd take a clown over a spider any day.

My biggest phobia is being poked in the eye. That's my room 101. A testimony of my bravado is the fact that I don't wear goggles all the time, even though I am at all times afraid I will lose an eye.

Thanks. Now my eyes hurt!

I never really got the fear of clowns thing, but with that picture, I can totally see it now!

I don't like clowns. I'm not scared of them (even from IT) but I'm not a fan. They're so in your face cheery that it rankles my nerves. If you want fear, I'd definitely go for spiders. Clowns may be annoying but spiders can crawl in your mouth and lay eggs.

Just sayin'.

I used to be TERRIFIED of clowns. But then my mom had this brilliant idea: she dressed me up as one. Then I understood they were just people. :)

Pennywise used to scare the CRAP out of me. I seriously avoided drains because of that movie. The book freaked me out even more!

I don't mind clowns - but I have a serious aversion to Chuckie

How about public speaking? *winks*

Great post. I have a hard time finding things that truly scare me, which makes it hard for me to write horror because I don't know what equals scary. I suggested clowns as a prompt for a friend's contest once and have written a couple scenes inspired by that since then. Even posted a scene on my its in the book blog, which people found scary. I went with clown serial killer who uses chemistry and such to turn women's bodies into mannequins. hehehe
